Day 1
Departing the UK, you fly overnight to Muscat. For direct flights you have Oman Air and for less expensive options you can fly indirect via one of the Middle Eastern hubs.
Day 2
On arrival into Muscat, if you’re self-driving your saloon car will be ready to collect from the airport; otherwise you’ll meet your driver-guide and then together you make your way through the impressive Sumail Gap in the Hajar Mountains to reach Nizwa and the interior, spending three nights in one of our preferred hotels in the region.
Day 3
Try to be here on a Friday for the livestock auction at Nizwa souq, in the shadow of the vast fort, and head up to the plateau overlooking Wadi Ghul.
Day 4
Discover some of the region's spectacular forts such as Jabreen and the UNESCO site of Bahla. We also recommend visiting the village of Al Hamra, a beautiful spot among a sea of palm trees, and stopping by the living history museum at Bait al Safah.
Day 5
Today you drive westwards towards the Wahiba Sands for a memorable desert adventure and overnight stay.
Day 6
You head out of the desert first stopping at the natural waters of Wadi Bani Khalid, before you hit the coastal road back to Muscat, passing palm-lined rivers in steep canyons at Wadi Shab and Tiwi, as well as taking the time to peer over the rim of the sinkhole at Bimah. You have a final three nights in Muscat.
Day 7
You have a private tour of the city, including the Sultan’s Palace, The Grand Mosque and Muttrah souq.
Day 8
Spend the day relaxing within your hotel, making the most of the beach and/ or swimming pools.
Day 9
You have a private transfer to the airport in time for your flight home.

Whilst some of Oman’s attractions require a 4×4 and a rugged attitude to travel, this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Luckily plenty of the country can be seen from the comfort of the main road, including all of the capital, Muscat, the towns of the interior, and even the viewpoint over Oman’s “Grand Canyon”, Wadi Ghul. On this trip, you only need to go off-road to explore the Wahiba Sands, a smooth and gentle experience.

This short itinerary is particularly good if you’re a family travelling during a half-term break, or a couple simply wanting to get away for a short time to experience a taste of the Middle East. You’ll pack a lot into these eight days but also have ample opportunity to relax too.

3 nights Nizwa and the mountains – 1 night Wahiba Sands – 3 nights Muscat
